REHABILITATION

In professional and elite sport, injuries are an occupational hazard and good medical care combined with specialist physiotherapy support are part of the basic equipment every top athlete requires.

A major problem that comes along with injury is the time athletes are forced to rest and recuperate, and during this time the muscles are not – or not sufficiently – worked. The rehabilitation time for a cruciate ligament tear, for example, can be as much as nine months, depending on the sport, and immediately after the surgical procedure, the affected leg is usually completely immobilized for about two months. After such a long period of time, the loss of muscle tone is so extensive (over 70%) that some four months of intensive physiotherapy is required, even for a professional athlete. One of the best kept secrets in the professional sports, however, is the power of the mind to aid physical rehabilitation.Using techniques that have been studied and proved, we have succeeded in overcoming the period of immobilization, leaving the athletes with only a small loss of muscle tone.

In this way, they were able to save three to four months on bodybuilding and returned to their old form much sooner than usual. Many sports involve not only muscle tone but also the coordination of complex sequences of movements. It is possible to imagine these sequences at the professional level as a kind of language of the body. During long periods of rehabilitation, the athlete’s body forgets a lot of ‘vocabulary’, and not only does this mean more time coming back up to speed, but it can also lead to loss of confidence on the part of the athlete. Again, with the help of the right mental techniques, it is possible to almost eliminate this outflow of ability, smoothing the transition from injury time to renewed competition.
